ISU Allee Research Farm Cover Crop Field Day

ISU Allee Demonstration Farm, 2030 640th St., Newell, Iowa (1 mile southwest of Newell and a quarter-mile east).

Registration and refreshments will be at 9 a.m. and the field day will start at 9:30 a.m. A noon lunch will be available.

The event is free and open to the public and includes complimentary refreshments and lunch.

Application has been made for Certified Crop Advisor credits.

  • Fall cover crop seeding, cover crop funding and seeding covers into standing crops are some of the highlights of an Aug. 27 field day at Iowa State University’s Allee Demonstration Farm.
  • Lyle Rossiter, Allee Demonstration Farm superintendent, will begin the program by reviewing the growing season and discussing cover crop research at the farm.
  • Michaela Klump, USDA NRCS in Buena Vista County, will discuss cover crop funding resources for the 2020 growing season.
  • Mike Witt, ISU Extension and Outreach field agronomist, will talk about research on cover crop species for inter seeding into standing crops. Witt will share results ISU Allee Research Farm to Hold Field Day Aug. 27 of different cover crop species and cover crop mixtures when seeded into a standing crop.
  • Paul Kassel, ISU Extension and Outreach field agronomist, will discuss planting a soybean crop into a standing cover crop. Kassel will discuss cover crop termination, herbicide use and planting equipment needed to plant into a cover crop.

Field day visitors are invited to the Jamie Adams farm, at 5961 185th street, Newell, after the noon lunch. Adams will discuss his use of cover crop as a forage crop and his cover crop plans for the 2020 growing season.
