    The event features more than 177 miles of great garage sales, countless bargains, and hidden treasures just waiting to be found.

    The route begins in Sloan and ends in Grimes, with many participating towns on the way, including the Crawford County towns of Charter Oak, Denison, and Manilla as well as Manning in Carroll County.

    This is the kick-off night for the program. This year’s theme is “A Universe of Stories.” This night the group will explore outer space with the Science Center of Iowa. Together we will follow the amazing journey of the Voyager Spacecraft, see awe-inspiring photos and attempt exciting space-themed experiments!

    The Westside Library will be at 6 p.m. for kids and adults to check out some books!

    The summer reading activities will take place on Wednesday evenings: July 10, 17, 24, 31, and August 7.

    The event is sponsored by the Westside Public Library and the Westside Fortnightly Club.

    The Crawford County Hunger Fighters and the Siouxland Food Bank sponsoring the food distribution. Food at this event is made available to Crawford County families and individuals in need of assistance. Registration begins at 1 p.m. with distribution following at approximately 2:30 p.m. Please bring your own boxes, bags or laundry baskets to carry your food supply.

    Distributions are held on the second Wednesday of the month. Donations made to the Crawford County Hunger Fighters may be dropped off at V & H Tire, The Hoffman Agency, or Our Savior Lutheran Church. Each dollar donated buys approximately 13 pounds of food from the Siouxland Food Bank.

  • Free Bicycle Workshop for Youth Ages 5 and Over

    The event will feature an informational bike safety program plus a free bike helmet for each participant as long as they last. (The helmets are all children’s sizes, no adult-size helmets.)

    ISU Allee Demonstration Farm, 2030 640th St., Newell, Iowa (1 mile southwest of Newell and a quarter-mile east).

    Registration and refreshments will be at 9 a.m. and the field day will start at 9:30 a.m. A noon lunch will be available.

    The event is free and open to the public and includes complimentary refreshments and lunch.

    Application has been made for Certified Crop Advisor credits.

    • Fall cover crop seeding, cover crop funding and seeding covers into standing crops are some of the highlights of an Aug. 27 field day at Iowa State University’s Allee Demonstration Farm.
    • Lyle Rossiter, Allee Demonstration Farm superintendent, will begin the program by reviewing the growing season and discussing cover crop research at the farm.
    • Michaela Klump, USDA NRCS in Buena Vista County, will discuss cover crop funding resources for the 2020 growing season.
    • Mike Witt, ISU Extension and Outreach field agronomist, will talk about research on cover crop species for inter seeding into standing crops. Witt will share results ISU Allee Research Farm to Hold Field Day Aug. 27 of different cover crop species and cover crop mixtures when seeded into a standing crop.
    • Paul Kassel, ISU Extension and Outreach field agronomist, will discuss planting a soybean crop into a standing cover crop. Kassel will discuss cover crop termination, herbicide use and planting equipment needed to plant into a cover crop.

    Field day visitors are invited to the Jamie Adams farm, at 5961 185th street, Newell, after the noon lunch. Adams will discuss his use of cover crop as a forage crop and his cover crop plans for the 2020 growing season.
